Our brains consist of two parts. One, the conscious part, is what you use when you think. It’s the slower of both, but it allows for logical reasoning and objective judgment. It separates us from most other animals. The other one takes care of all necessary things to keep your body running, it also handles emotions, but most of all: It does all the things that you do “instinctively”. For example if someone throws something at you, you automatically duck and protect your head. It’s extremely fast and you decide things immediately without any pondering, like a high-performance decision-machine.

But the best thing is: By consciously thinking with your slow-brain you are actually programming your fast-brain. Let’s say putting your hand into the fire hurts. You think about it and perhaps even repeat the “mistake”. Voila, you have programmed your subconscious brain. The same is true when you learn how to paint, play golf or drive a car.

But that’s not all.

You can actually use your subconscious brain to work on very difficult tasks. While you are sleeping. Ever heard of the advice that in order to learn something, let’s say mathematics for an exam, you should read the book carefully in the evening and then go to sleep? That really works, because while you sleep, you subconscious tries to figure it out and to understand the new subject. Chances are that when you wake up, the same task that was difficult for you in the evening is much simpler in the morning.

Learn to start utilizing that fact more consciously.

And be aware of the concept of habit. Some people say that if you do something 20 times, it becomes a habit. Knowing that can help you acquire almost any new skill you desire to have.
